ST. ANNE'S CATHEDRAL Lower Donegall St Belfast BT1 The foundation stone was laid on September 6, 1899 by the Countess of Shaftesbury. The Cathedral was actually built on the site of St Anne's Church, which dates back to 1776, the first Parish Church of Belfast. The outside of the building is dominated by the large Celtic cross on the North Transcept, which was completed in 1981. Inside, there are many remarkable features, such as the Great West Window, the Regimental Chapel and the pillars of the Naeve, which bear symbols of Belfast life. Look out for the Pillar of Industry, which depicts the four stages of linen production. The only tomb in the Cathedral can be found in the South Aisle. This belongs to Lord Carson of Duncairn, who was leader of the Ulster Unionist Party during the Home Rule crisis, 1911-22. Two CDs of St Anne's Cathedral choir music are on sale in the porch area.
