Belfast Community Circus opens in Gordon Street.
Belfast Community Circus School has established itself as a quality provider of circus skills for children and young people throughout Northern Ireland, and has always been at the leading edge of Community Circus initiatives, experimenting with new ways of working and implementing European models of good practice.
Following months of negotiations and presentations, BCCS entered into partnership with the Laganside Development Corporation, to completely rebuild an old, disused warehouse in Gordon Street, in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter.  Work on the building began in May of this year and was completed at the end of September. The result?  A state of the art facility for circus training and community arts performance - the only venue of its kind in Ireland.  From Gordon Street, the building looks deceptively small, but once inside, visitors are stunned by the sheer scale of the space

The BYCG takes its creative energy from punk and its social politics from the Crasstifarian ethos which also evolved in the late '70s. Today, the centre has a fairly simple brief, according to Alison Belshaw: "We're basically providing rehearsal and recording facilities for young musicians at cheap prices." Known as 'Giros', it also features a vegetarian cafe and the Belfast Musicians' Collective. For many acts, the BYCG is the only place where they can afford to make a demo tape, and many careers have started with rudimentary, if vital testimonies to their worth, from the centre's 16 track desk.  The centre has been operative for 12 years now, most recently on the site of the old Plaza night-club, and the Giro's experience also includes poetry readings, dance nights and access to alternative publications. A self-help group in the purest sense of the term.
