The Cathedral quarter, in the Donegall Street area of Belfast is one of the oldest and most historic districts in Belfast. It is the only area to retain its cobbled entrys (including the Duke of York, one of Belfast's oldest pubs), original buildings (the Northern Bank, the Irish News, St. Anne's Cathedral, the Newsletter building, St. Patrick's Church), and commercial concerns which have been established in the street for the best part of this century. The area also boasts Belfast's most beautiful piazza situated in front of St. Anne's Cathedral.
It is also a place where many of Belfast's cultural organisations have found a home due to availability of low rent property. There are numerous artists studios, a media centre, musicians rehearsal rooms, premises for a number of theatre groups, music promotion agencies, several art galleries, a dance studio, music venues and silk screen and photographic workshops. Laganside Corporation is now the public sector organisation responsible for the regeneration of the Cathedral Quarter.
This is Belfast's last chance to hang on to its historic past, its ghosts, its unique locally owned businesses and an opportunity to build on the cultural presence already established area….to create a vibrant cultural quarter where ALL the people of Belfast can use and enjoy.
The site highlights just some of the businesses and was created by residents concerned about the future of the area and to inform and gain support for OUR VISION OF WHAT THE CATHEDRAL QUARTER CAN BECOME.
